Maggie Q can kick butt in stilettos

Maggie Q’s own life story is not too different from the character she plays on CW’s new fall action thriller, Nikita. When I was growing up in Hong Kong, Maggie Q was also in Hong Kong working as a supermodel. She was known as the Eurasian bombshell. Hailing from Hawaii, the Vietnamese American moved to Hong Kong as a broke student, hoping to earn a bit of money for a few months. Maggie Q ended up staying in Hong Kong for eight years. She shortened her last name from Quigley to Q to make it easier for Asian audiences to pronounce. The name Maggie Q is so catchy, it’s reminiscent of Jackie O.

Maggie Q in the pilot episode of Nikita

What makes Maggie Q a perfect fit for the role of Nikita is her martial arts background. When she first went to Hong Kong, Jackie Chan took her under his wing and trained her in martial arts. I saw the pilot episode last night and was very impressed. I’ve never been a huge fan of femme fatale characters, but boy,  Nikita just knocked my socks off. With her martial arts background, she really is a tough cookie who will kick your butt, in stilettos.

And if you had watched the first episode, you will remember her debut scene in a red bikini at a pool party, and she is looking fiiiiine. You will have noticed a tattoo of a bird on the side of her hip. TV blog Zap2it solves the mystery. Q apparently visited a fortune teller in Hong Kong who told her she was a “bird”.

Q tells Zap2it, “They’d always look at me at the end of the session and tell me, ‘You’re a bird.’ Always,” she says. “I didn’t get it. As I started getting older, I got it. I met an artist who basically said, ‘You understand what bird you represent. You’re a phoenix because you’ve come from nothing and you’re building something.’ I wanted it to be the bird of strength.”

Watch Maggie Q kick butt in stilettos on CW’s Nikita at 9pm Thursdays.
